George Onslow, Quintettes op. 78, 80 et 82 :

The publishing house éditions Fuzeau have sent us facsimile editions of the three quintets with two violas op. 78, 80, and 82 in the series "Collection Dominantes".

Jean-Philippe Vasseur, the editor of this publication, has put together each volume on the basis of contemporary French editions of the composer's works along with the most relevant manuscripts. For each work, performers now not only now have an edition in separate parts (Brandus, 1851-52), but also a score done by the double-bass player Achille Gouffé (1804-1874). The title page of the edition of op. 78 bears a handwritten dedication to the cellist Auguste Franchomme, but, even more noteworthy is the inclusion of the very fine autograph manuscript of the op. 80 quintet (in separate parts). This exceptional manuscript was intended for the publisher; it is one of the rare examples that have come down to us.
With their intense lyricism and profoundly introspective mood, these three quintets, written between 1848 and 1850, are Onslow's last works for strings and, as the publisher quite rightly points out, are numbered amongst his most moving compositions.
