George Onslow

the french Beethoven

The impact on the Romantic period of French music of the composer George Onslow, born in Clermont-Ferrand on 27 July 1784 is still insufficiently recognized. An Englishman from the Auvergne and a Parisian from Clermont-Ferrand, this "citizen of Europe" produced a large number of works, including symphonies, opéras, duos and trios, and string quartets and quintets, some of which must be reckoned among the masterpieces of 19th-century chamber music.

On this site you will find all the currently available resources on the composer : a brief biography of George Onslow, a complete discography, sheet music for sale or on-line and a comprehensive bibliography. In addition there are soundfiles to listen to, articles on line, or pages containing hitherto unavailable information on the music and musicians of the Auvergne.
